Business Phone Systems

All of my loyal readers know by now that I run my own business out of my home building and repairing computers. Over the past year I have experimented with many different ways to keep my customer's phone calls separate from my private line. Hubby and I ditched our land line phone a few years ago after problems with our local phone company, and I've been struggling to find a way to keep my business calls off my cell phone. I've been using different free services provided on the internet like Aim Phoneline and Skype, but I know there are other options out there that might be better for me.

I need to check out Neobits and some of their systems like Talkswitch. It's a phone system for small businesses that includes the latest in VoIP technology. The company offers over 15 different brands of phone systems to choose from depending on the size of your business. It doesn't matter if you've got 2 users or 250, they've got something for everyone. Some of the brand names include Panasonic, Talkswitch, and Avaya just to name a few.

I know I don't run a huge business right now, but I do need to consider setting up a dedicated phone system just for the business. That way if I ever do decide to expand I'll be ready. With over 3,000 customers nationwide, dial tone and broadband internet in all states, and the ability to install services in every zip code is looks like this company just might have something I'm looking for.

Friday Feast 173

I'm late as usual, but here's my Friday Feast.

Appetizer
Name 2 things you would like to accomplish in 2008.

I would like to expand my home business to include support for Windows and Linux both. Right now I'm still learning Linux. I would also like to quit smoking. It's something I've failed at for 3 years now.

Soup
With which cartoon character do you share personality traits?

I'd say I'm a lot like Goofy.

Salad
What time of day (or night) were you born?

6:30pm

Main Course
Tell us something special about your hometown.

I grew up in an authentic little German town that's bordered by mountains on one side and lakes on the other. It's amazing how much things can change in 26 years. There isn't much authenticity left theses days.

Dessert
If you could receive a letter from anyone in the world, who would you want to get one from?

That's a tough one. There are a ton of people I'd like to receive letters from, but my brain hurts too much to narrow it down to one right now.

Bath & Body Works Goodies

There are no words to describe how much I love most of the scents from Bath & Body Works. My skin is so sensitive that it can't handle the use of their lotions everyday, but when I get something from B&B I can't wait to try it. I got a ton of Bath & Body Works goodies for Christmas this year, and here are a couple I decided to share with you.

First I received the Forever Merry Gift Set in Japanese Cherry Blossom scent. This set is available online, and it's on sale right now, but the only scents I'm seeing on the website with it are Wild Honeysuckle (yummy) and Sensual Amber.

I love this little gift set. First of all it came with a super cute little bag. It's a red wool bag with a faux fur trim, and it's just screams pair me with a little black dress at the Christmas party! It's got a big snowflake design in the center of it, so it's not useful for any other holiday though. I filled it with my wallet, lotion, and lip gloss last night, and it accompanied me to our last Christmas party. The little bag came filled with a 2 oz Japanese Cherry Blossom Body Splash, 2 oz Japanese Cherry Blossom Body Lotion, and a 5 oz tube of CO Bigelow Apothecaries Cinnamint Mentha Lip Shine.

If you've never tried the Cinnamint Mentha Lip Shine you're totally missing out. This stuff is awesome, and I grab a tube normally when it's on sale. It's a lip gloss that's infused with cinnamon and peppermint for fresh breath, so essentially I see it as a 2 in 1 lip gloss and breath freshener! Hubby normally doesn't like minty lip stuff, but he kept asking me if he could use this one yesterday. This stuff is on sale for $5 right now, so pick some up with it's a great buy! I ordered another tube today!

The Japanese Cherry Blossom is one of my favorite scents from the Signature collection. It's an exotic fragrance made of Japanese cherry blossom, vanilla rice, oriental woods, and mimosa petals. Trust me, it smells super yummy, and I'm ordering a full size shower gel, shampoo, and conditioner in this scent.

Other than the gift set I also received multiple small bottles of Sparkling Peach body lotion also from the Signature Collection line. Just about every woman in my family knows I love this stuff, so they all gave me little purse size 2oz bottles. I won't run out for awhile! It's a very light scent, but the peach smells so yummy I want to eat it!

Daily Three 12/20/07

Daily Three

1. Do you currently live within your financial means (meaning you are consistently spending at or below your monthly income?) What factors contribute to your answer?

I'm barely living within my financial means. We've been paying off debt and repairing our credit reports for awhile now, and even though hubby and I's combined income is double that of most of our friends, we're still pinching pennies to get by on most occasions. We've only got a few more months to go though, and our debt will be paid (minus the car payment but that doesn't count)! I think all the time we've spent pinching pennies will be very worth it!

2. What luxuries, if any, do you allow yourself? Could you give them up and still feel fulfilled?

I give myself some small luxuries, but I'm not a very material person. I budget a small amount every month for my bath & body fetish. Most girls have a shoe fetish. I have a handmade soap and lotion fetish. I also budget for computer parts on occasion because hubby and I can't live without our computers!

3. Imagine that for 12 months, you were forced to live on an income that is half of what you currently make right now. What steps would you have to take to insure all of your basic needs were met?

At this point, I'd honestly have to stop paying the credit card bills. That's the only way we could make it. Once our debt is paid off in a few months I could live with less than half of the income we have now. It's amazing to take a look at how much we spend paying off things every month.

Bonus Question:

Do you have any financial tips or strategies that you would be willing to share?

Whatever you do don't ever put something on the credit card because you think you'll have the cash for it before the bill comes in. There will always be something that will prevent you from paying it.

Definitely create a budget and stick to it. By budgeting you'll end up saving a lot more than you can imagine.

Always put at least 5% (preferably 10%) of your earnings into savings every week. You'll be surprised that you don't even miss it.

Using Blogs For Business Logs

Hubby and his boss have also found a way to use blogs that isn't our typical blog use. As part of his boss's plan to run a more efficient business, he has asked each of his crew leaders to make a daily log of all of the work completed by their crew everyday. He asked the crew leaders to write down or type up this log to be turned into him every morning.

As soon as hubby came home and told me about it I said is he going to provide the paper and ink? Why am I going to use my ink that I need for my business to type this up for you every night. Oh, and that's another thing. Why am I typing this up for you every night. You can type it yourself!

Hubby mentioned that he'd have no problem typing it up if he could keep all of his logs in one place, so I suggested a private blog where he can keep a record. He discussed it with his boss, and his boss agreed the blogs are a great idea. I set up free blogs for all of the crew leaders, and for a week now they have been recording their crew's daily logs. All the boss has to do is visit each blog whenever he feels like it. Now he's got a full report, and I'm not wasting my paper and ink.

Here's an example of what they're doing.

Blogs Becoming More Than Just A Blog

Blogs have become a lot more these days than just a place to write down our thoughts. My little cousin called me last night wanting to know if I could help her find a pretty layout for her blog. My response was you have a blog? She's 15, and I know she has a Myspace blog, but I didn't know she has a blog outside of Myspace.

Think educational tool...

She explained that her English teacher gave them a project. They are all keeping blogs that can only be seen by the teacher and all their classmates. Each day part of their homework is to write something interesting in their blog. It can be a poem, short story, something as simple as the piece of volcom clothing she likes, or anything that gets her creative juices flowing. At the end of the next semester the kids will be allowed to decide if they want to make their blogs public or keep them private for just their classmates to see.

I think this is such a great idea! When I was in High School I took a medical explorers class. I had to shadow 60 hours at the hospital, and everyday when my shadowing shift was over I had to write down my experiences in a journal. At the end of the week we had to turn our journals into our teacher to be graded. Unfortunately this caused a problem because a lot of us chose to knock out a lot of our shadowing hours on Saturday, so we ended up with loose notebook paper stuck in our journals to cover the days we couldn't take our journals with us.

If we'd kept online blogs of our experiences not only would it have been easier for us, but our teacher could have read them whenever she liked. I could also go back and look at my experiences at any time. I know I still have my journal packed away somewhere, but if I wanted to read it I'd have to pull out a ton of boxes just to find it. Keeping the blog also inspires you to write, and hopefully a lot of these kids will continue to write long after they've left this class.

Life Changing

We all meet many people during our lifetime, but have you ever met someone who significantly impacted your life in a dramatic way, then they just disappeared? That happened to me about 8 years ago.

I can't say what happened, but what I can say is that this person didn't just impact my life, he saved it. My life would definitely be much different if we hadn't lost touch, but due to some circumstances beyond our control I haven't seen him again since the night he saved my life. One day I might talk about what happened, but 8 years later I still have a hard time discussing it with anyone, even the people who were around that night. We'll call him Joe for the sake of this story. No, it's not even close to his real name.

I walked outside to take the dog out, and while I was standing out there I noticed a group of guys at my uncle's car lot next door working on the roof. They've been out there all week replacing the old roof on the house that serves as the office, and I've had one of them walk over here a few times to borrow the phone while my cousins are on their lunch break and no one is in the office to let them use the phone.

One of them spotted me in the yard, and started heading my way. I assumed he was going to ask to use the phone, but as he got closer I noticed he had his thumb wrapped in a paper towel. He had his head down walking pretty fast, so I assumed he'd gotten injured somehow. He got to my driveway, close enough to talk to me and said "Mam, do you have a band aid or something I could get from you? I sliced my thumb on some of this tin."

Of course I'm not going to let a guy stand there bleeding, so I ran inside and grabbed my basket of first aid stuff. When I walked out the door he was sitting on my porch swing inspecting the cut. He looked up when I walked out, and that's when I saw his face and realized I was looking at Joe.

He didn't know I lived in this house, although he could have probably connected the dots if he'd thought about it. He knows my Grandparents own this house, and he's been here with me before. We've both changed a lot, so much that we could probably walk by each other in public without realizing it, but standing face to face it was hard to not recognize each other.

He's 30 now, recently divorced, and a full time father of 2. He just moved back to the state a couple months ago with his kids after the divorce so he could be close to his family. We talked about the last time we saw each other for a few minutes, but we quickly moved to better conversation. He showed me a couple pictures of his kids, I told him about hubby, and we agreed to get together to catch up. His crew called it a day at 2, so he stopped back by here on his way out to exchange numbers, and we promised to get together some time this weekend.

Seeing him today just reminded me how precious life is, and how we need to be thankful for the people we meet along the way. People impact our lives everyday, and sometimes it's in a bigger way than we can imagine.

Situation Sunday #37

Situation Sunday? A few scenarios? What would I do? This meme sounds like it's right up my alley!

Situation # 1

You are out shopping, you have a small child with you. { Could be yours or a relative, you are watching.} You make it back to the car. Put the child in the back in the car seat. Load all the bags into the trunk. Get in the car and put the keys in the ignition......Suddenly a masked guy jumps into the passengers side,,and says drive lady in a angry voice with a gun pointed at your head.....What do you do?

I would definitely not want to put the child's life in danger, but driving off with a mad man like this could put us both in more danger than seeking help, so I would drive off, but I would pull out of the space in the direction of the most people, then I would start honking the horn wildly. Carjackers don't want people seeing them, and they're less likely to hurt you in a crowded area with tons of witnesses. I seriously doubt he would shoot me in front of a ton of people, but leaving with him could find me and the child dead on the side of the road in the middle of know where

Situation # 2

Time for your family Christmas get together. Everyone is there, from your siblings to their spouses, and children. Every one is told to bring a gift, one that can be given to a male or a female. And everyone is to bring a child's gift, equal to the number of children that will be at the party. The adult gifts are put in a grab bag, where you pull out one, and if it is the one you brought you have the option to keep or pick again. The children's gifts are done the same way. You happen to pick a gift, and it happens to be a "re gift", one that you have bought for your sister a few years ago. What do you do or say as you open the gift?

I don't think I would say anything. If she felt the need to re-gift it in our little game, then I would come to the realization that I didn't buy her something she could actually use. I would also know my sister is young and money is tight, so maybe she couldn't afford to buy a gift and chose something she thought someone else might enjoy.

Situation # 3

A big snow storm is brewing out side. Already a foot of snow has fallen and expecting another foot to come. Your house is out in the country with your nearest neighbor being 5 miles away. Your house is on a back road. The last storm brought only 8 inches, and it took the highway department 1 week before they cleared the roads for you to get out. This storm looks like it will be much longer before you are cleared out. The phone service has went out,,,you can see where the line snapped. There is a knock on your door, almost like a bang. You open your door to find Teri Hatcher and Johny Depp at your door. They will be staying with you till the storm ends. They were on their way to shoot a movie, got lost and ended up stuck in the snow. They have walked 2 miles in the blizzard to get to your place......{ Keep in mind...after this it will be on the news, and tons of reporters shall be coming} How will you handle the next 2 weeks?

Lock Teri Hatcher in my basement and molest Johnny Depp? Only in my dreams! Nah I'd try to stay cool about the whole situation and be as hospitable as possible. I'd hope they wouldn't really be interested in a lot of people knowing where they are or that they're stuck, so hopefully I wouldn't have to deal with publicity. Of course I'd have to get Johnny Depp to sign my entire collection of Depp movies, and I'd probably pull out Fear & Loathing again if he agreed to watch it with me. Then I'd tell them both famous or not, no one's getting free room and board! Get to shoveling! Haha, ok maybe not.

Still Trying To Find A Present For Dad

I'm really worried about what I'm going to get my dad for Christmas. I've had a ton of ideas and all of them have fallen through. My sister suggested I get him a gift card to his favorite restaurant, but they don't offer them.

I finally thought I had the perfect gift, a gift card for Firehouse Subs, but now I don't know if he'll use it if I get it for him. I thought he would love it because he used to always take me to Subway when he'd pick me up from school, but when I mentioned Subway to him tonight he said he's gotten sick of subs lately. Oops, I guess he doesn't want a gift card to a sub place then does he?

I might have to revert back to one of the presents I used to get him every year, gold coins for his coin collection. Oh yeah, my dad's a huge coin collector. Whenever any type of new coin comes out the bank holds 10 rolls for him. He's all the time searching the flea market for rare coins as well, so I know any coin I give him is going to be a great gift. The problem is I don't know what he has already. On top of that with it being so close to Christmas I can't exactly order something and expect it to be here on time.

My dad has always said buying coins, especial those that are gold and silver, is a good investment. You never know how much the value will increase in years to come. I guess the fact that silver is at such a high value price right now just goes to show he's right about that.

Three Questions...

Boredom has set in once again, so what do I do? We all know I search for memes. Here's an interesting one I might participate in when I remember to do it. It's called Daily Three. Sometimes questions are posted daily, but most often they're posted a couple times a week giving you a chance to answer them whenever you want.

1. What is the worst natural disaster to affect the city in which you live? Were you living there when it happened?

The only forms of natural disasters we deal with are tornadoes (most often), occasional flash flooding, and sometimes wildfires due to the droughts. Honestly we've never really had any really bad natural disasters. I'd say the worse I've seen are the tornadoes, and we've been lucky that they haven't come that close to our home.

2. Do you know if there are sex offenders living in your neighborhood? Are you concerned about it?

Actually there are quite a few sex offenders in my area. I can't exactly call it a neighborhood since I live on a rural road, but I know of 3 on our road. One lives 2 houses down, and I can't say I'm really scared of him. He's in his 90s.

Another one is a guy I went to high school with, and he's only on the list for having sex with his 16 year old girlfriend when he was 18. Her parents had him charged with rape, but I think it was completely wrong. Now he's married to that girl, and they don't speak to her parents. It's a sad situation.

As for the 3rd, I don't know the person, but it's a woman, and I'm pretty sure I could take her ;-), so I'm not really concerned about any of them. If I had children and didn't know these people or why they were on the list, that might be a different story.

3. If you were elected to your city council, what would be the first item you would want to vote on (go ahead and be creative)?

The first item I would vote on....hmmm...I would vote to ban more than 3 of those huge blow up holiday yard ornaments from being displayed in a single yard at once. There's a woman who lives up the road from us who lines her entire driveway (both sides of it) with about 50 of them for EVERY holiday. I've often debated if I'd really get charged with destruction of property if I sat across the road from her house and shot them all out with a pellet gun.

Easily Occupied

I'm watching a movie with hubby right now, and it's made me realize how easily occupied he is. We're watching a movie we've seen over 100 times, but he hasn't taken his eyes off the screen as his sits there quoting it word for word, and he isn't paying a bit of attention to what I'm doing. Even with movies I love like this one, Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, my attention wanders, so I'm sitting here blogging and surfing. And to think hubby's the one with A.D.D.!

Oh well at least he's occupied. That gives me time to sit here looking for his Christmas presents. We decided we would do our Christmas late this year. That way we can concentrate on everyone else, and we'll enjoy a nice quiet celebration all to ourselves later without having to rush around Christmas morning worrying about the next place we've got to be while we're trying to enjoy our own Christmas. I'm probably going to check out some men's jewelry because we've talked about buying new wedding bands this year for our anniversary. I might see if hubby will agree to buy them for our Christmas instead.

Repairing The Laptop

I've got to go to Home Depot today to pick up my new soldering iron, so any of you that make jewelry or do any type of computer repair can look forward to a review. I'll tell you all about how the iron I get works once I pick it up and use it to repair my notebook computer.

I've been ordering parts for a couple weeks now, and I've finally got everything I need to repair the DC jack. The laptop belonged to a friend, and when the jack broke he tried to get a friend who didn't know what he was doing to repair it. Instead of properly changing out the jack the friend just soldered the ac adapter to the dc jack. Having that ac adapter hanging off the laptop left it open for more damage, and he ended up bumping into a wall and breaking the DC adapter off inside the AC adapter.

He brought the computer to me and said I don't want it anymore. If you can fix it you can have it. If not Ebay it for parts or something. It took me a few months to find the right parts, but I finally found the correct DC jack I need as well as the AC adapter tip. Finding that AC adapter tip was a life saver because it saved me from spending $60-100 on a new laptop charger.

Having the laptop is going to make a world of difference because I'll be able to blog "on location". There have been a ton of items at the bath and body store my mother in law works at that I want to review, and the owner promised to let me come in one day to sample a bunch of the products in the store. I can take my laptop with me and blog from the store as I try each product!

My First Friday Feast

It's 1am, and as usual I can't sleep, so I'm feeling my time by doing a few memes I haven't participated in before. I have this little love for memes, so I'm hoping I'll be able to find a few new ones that I enjoy. Maybe you'll enjoy some of them and decide to participate, too!

I've wanted to participate in Friday Feast for awhile now, but I always seem to forget about it when Friday rolls around. Here's my first attempt at this meme I've heard so many wonderful things about!

Appetizer
Make up a word and give us its definition.

Bliver- a mix between blue and silver...aka my favorite color!

Soup
What is currently your favorite song?

I never have just one favorite. I listen to so many different genres of music that I can't pick just one song. Heck I couldn't even make a list of 10 favorites if I wanted to!

Salad
What’s at the top of your Christmas wish list this year?

A digital camera. I can't keep using my cell phone cam for everything.

Main Course
Name a scent that reminds you of someone special in your life.

Cedar. I love the smell of cedar, and it always reminds me of hubby. Why? He works with cedar on an almost daily basis at work, so he always comes home smelling really good.

Dessert
Who is someone on television that you feel probably shouldn’t be, and why?

Sarah Silverman, and a lot of people probably totally disagree with me on this, but I think most of her material isn't really that funny, and she's got a habit of taking things way too far.

Still Down

I'm still dealing with my other blog being down because of the server issues, and this totally sucks. Yet again it's why I'm glad I keep my free blogs going especially during times like this. I've got to be able to rant about stuff somewhere, and the only place I've got to do it while that one's down is here.

The word right now is that everything should be up and running again by 9pm, but we'll see. If it's not I'll be taking a big monetary loss from all of the jobs I've done for paid posting that are being rejected today because the blog is down. You think when you move to your own hosting you're safe, but I guess you never really are safe from monetary loss are you?

Puppy Driving Me Crazy

On top of feeling sick I'm also having to deal with two other issues.

First of all, my self-hosted blog is down, and there's nothing I can do about it. The company that hosts the server I'm on had major issues this morning, and a few of their servers have been down all day. I'm not the only one who has to suffer with this. There are a ton of multi-million dollar businesses hosting their websites on those same servers, and they've been down since this morning.

It just goes to show no matter how great your service is there's always the possibility of something going wrong. At this point I'm just hoping they get the problem fixed soon, but luckily I get 3 months free service anytime something major like this has happened. I've been with them since April, and this is the first time I've experienced any downtime that lasted for more than an hour.

My second issue deals with the puppy sitting. That dog is driving me crazy! I know he's only 9 weeks old, but he's just too much energy for me to handle right now. He pees more than any dog I've ever seen, so he's constantly whining at the door to go out. At least he lets me know, but at this point I have to keep him separate from my own dog because he's so small I think Bubba might hurt him. Bubba wants to bounce around over him, and that could end in disaster.

That means I have two dogs in two separate rooms constantly whining wanting to get to each other. Bubba's good until the puppy starts whining, and then he joins in. I wish I could close my eyes right now and open them to find it's 5pm and his new mama's here. Great now he's trying to chew my tennis shoes!

Wondering If I Have Hashimoto's

This day couldn't get any worse could it? OK I'm sure it could, but I don't want to think about it. I woke up this morning with a lump on my throat. That means one thing. My thyroid is acting up. I've had issues with my thyroid for a couple of years, but it's not bad enough for me to be on medication.

My sister has Hashimoto's disease which is an autoimmune disease that causes the body to attack the thyroid. She was diagnosed with it at 18, and is the youngest case the thyroid specialist here has ever seen. I have to get tested every 2 years for it, but because the disease can attack in spurts, they can't be 100% sure I have it until I show enough antibodies in my blood to test positive for it.

Sometimes I will show classic symptoms of having hypothyroidism while other times I show symptoms of hyperthyroidism. That's a big symptom of Hashimoto's because the thyroid can try to repair itself.

The lump on my throat this morning is due to my thyroid being inflamed. From time to time I may also feel like I can't swallow or my throat is constantly tender. I couldn't sleep at all last night which is another classic sign.

Unfortunately when I called the doctor this morning I couldn't get an appointment until next week. That seems to be what always happens. Unless I have another "thyroid attack" as they call it around the time I have to have the blood work, my blood will test negative for the antibodies. Thyroid attacks normally happen during the night (causing the insomnia), and if they aren't continuous the thyroid will repair itself to some degree.

I can't be placed on medication to replace my thyroid hormones until they can be sure exactly what is happening. The only other option is have is to have my thyroid biopsied, and at this time there's no need to go that far. I just have to keep up with my chart that tells what symptoms I'm having and when, and hopefully eventually I'll be able to get a full diagnosis one way or the other.

Staying Awake With The Puppy

I need to add a new entry to my resume...puppy sitter. I forgot what it was like to have a very young puppy in the house. I've got my friend's 9 week old Weimaraner puppy until tomorrow afternoon, and I forgot how many times you have to get up during the night with it.

This one's on a schedule that's completely opposite of mine. It gets fed at 4am because my friend has to be at work by 5. It has to go out to pee every 2 hours because it's already house broken at 9 weeks. That means I've got to pretty much set my clock just like it was a baby.

I guess I really won't be sleeping much, so I can probably already prepare myself to stay up most of the night watching infomercials for things like a mesothelioma lawyer. This is going to be one long night.

Internet Cutting In And Out

I've pretty much given up on trying to do anything around the computer today. This is the first time I've been able to sit down to blog because my internet has been cutting in and out all day. Actually I've been typing this up, and then rebooting my modem just to try to get a signal long enough to post it.

Charter will be coming out this afternoon to fix it, but there's no telling what time they'll be here or if they'll even get it fixed. I'm so sick of this. We've been dealing with these problems from Charter for over 4 years, and they have yet to get anything working right.

I'd love to be able to switch to another company, but no one else offers cable internet in our area. There's no way I'm going back to dial-up, and considering satellite internet is about as bad as thinking of returning to dial-up.

Maybe my best bet is to just move. OK yeah I'm not going to really pack up my stuff and move just because my internet service sucks, but it does make me want to do some searches for stuff like Wilmington NC real estate. You never know what I might find that I like. Hmmm...I wonder if I could really convince hubby to move to Wilmington. I seriously doubt it!

Curious As A Cat Week 95

If you would like to play Curious As A Cat, feel free to join us! I'm sure we would all love to hear your answers.

1) What three things do you value most about your religion or spiritual practices?

This is a tough one for me. I'm not as religious as I used to be. Well let me rephrase that. I'm still religious, just not the way my mom thinks I should be. I don't agree with my mom's church all the time. (She's Church of God) I still have my beliefs, but I think what I value most is the ability to determine for myself what I think is right and wrong. I believe a lot of the things I was taught during my childhood are radical or extreme, and I'm happy to be able to practice my beliefs the way I see them.

2) Is there a way that you feel inferior to other people generally? Why do you think this is?

Not really. We're each individual people who are equal. We all came from the same place, and our lives all end. I have nothing to feel inferior about.

3) Where is your favorite mall? Why?

I honestly don't have a favorite mall. I loathe shopping, and I will stay away from malls as much as possible. I guess you could say the internet is my favorite mall! I can get everything in one place without even leaving my comfortable recliner.

4) For whom have you had the most sympathy or pity?

Lately it's been for my best friend. She finally found a way out of an abusive relationship this weekend, and he's done nothing but try to ruin her ever since. He pressed false charges against her, called child services, and called her employer making false accusations trying to cause her to lose her child and her job. Luckily no one believed him, the charges were dropped, and he's the one who will be sitting back in jail for violation of his bond agreement for CDV assault with a deadly weapon, but my best friend has had to first deal with the abuse for months, and now she's spent all day with investigators and the judge just to get him out of her life.

5) Show and Tell. What comes to mind first when you see this picture? Or, tell a story if it reminds you of one.
This photo reminds me that last week I had fires roaring in my wood stove, but this week I'm not going to have to build a single one. It's friggin' 78 degrees outside right now! What is wrong with the weather? My Florida friends are telling me their freezing while here in SC it's almost 80 degrees!

How Much Things Have Changed

That "Did You Know?" video I just posted really has me thinking. I can't even imagine the way things could change in the next 20 or 30 years. Looking back on the past 20 years it amazes me how far we've come with technology.

The thing about jobs really got me thinking, too. I've had a lot of jobs. Actually I've had 8 different jobs since the age of 16, and I'm only 26. I don't think I have to worry about switching to another job anytime soon, but when I look at how many jobs I've had it's a lot. I wonder if the creators of the video took into consideration that a lot of people have changed jobs because their jobs have become obsolete.

Out of all of the jobs I've held, 2 of them did become obsolete. One of them, my services were no longer needed because the business shut down, but the other one was a manufacturing job. My job ended when a machine became the faster, more efficient option for the company. Three departments were let go because why should they keep workers to do the jobs when machines can run the soldering, plasma cutter, chip programming, etc.

Have you had to change jobs because the company decided to give your job to a machine?

Did You Know?

Are we ready for the future? Are the children of today correctly being taught in their schools how to deal with the shifts that are happening in the world around us? What kind of changes are taking place? What will the world be like in the future?

Here's an interesting presentation called "Did You Know" that gives you a lot of insight into what is going on. The original version of this presentation was developed for a Colorado high school staff of 150 people in August 2006 to get them thinking about what schools need to do to make sure children are going to be successful in the 21st century. This video has since been updated with more recent statistics and has been seen around the world. A website has been set up where you can join the discussion at http://shifthappens.wikispaces.com.

Use Your Imagination

If you've ever wanted to be an artist here's your chance. Art.com has a nice little online tool called artPad that allows you to paint anything you want. Then you can choose a frame and hang it in the gallery. If you've got a tablet and pen you can do even better, but since art is in the eye of the beholder you can let your imagination flow with your mouse and the various tools they give you.

Are your kids driving you crazy? Load artPad, and let them go crazy! Not only will it keep them occupied, but they can let their imaginations run wild while you have time to do those things you've wanted to do like look for a lasvegas hotel. Here's a quick little bit of artwork I made. What do you think?

Boredom Sets In

Do you ever have one of those days when you're just so bored you'll look at anything? That's kind of how I am today. I started a load of laundry, picked up a bit of clutter, cleaned the kitchen, and sat down to do nothing. Hubby's occupied by the tv, and the animals are both passed out on my bed instead of trying to pile into my desk chair with me.

I started out thinking I would find a few presents today. I've got a few things left to buy, but I have no clue what to get. I was randomly looking through different stores at things like espresso machines that I know I can't afford, but I got bored with that and remembered the handy dandy little stumble button on my toolbar.

There's no telling what kind of things I'm going to find while I'm stumbling around today, and you know if I like what I see I'm going to share!

Amazing Cakes

As a kid I was always intriqued by the cakes my Grandma would make for my birthday. She always made me some sort of doll cake where there was an actual doll, and the icing constructed the dress. She's made cakes for years, and she's known for being inventive with the different types of wedding cakes she designs, but I bet she never thought of making something like this!

Yes, that's really a cake! I spotted it over at Mike's Amazing Cakes, and if you like checking out original cakes that were made with a ton of imagination you should pop on over there. I couldn't believe some of the things I saw! I'm hungry from looking at all of them, but everything looks so awesome that I couldn't imagine ruining it by eating it.

Trying To Juggle My Schedule

I haven't really had much to say on this blog this week, and I'm sorry about that. I haven't really had any new products to review because I've been so busy with my computer repair business. It doesn't help either that my internet's been out for 2 days, and I've been sitting around going crazy waiting for the cable guy to finally show up to fix it.

I promise I'll have some new stuff to review soon. I'm going to head out shopping tomorrow to see what kind of cool things I can find, and I might just stop by the bath and body shop my mother in law works at to see what kind of awesome stuff I can find. Until then you might just have to wait around to see what I find. At least I won't be filling you full of random posts about boring things like corporate performance management.

Cooking It Oldskool

Did I take a flashback in time? No it's still 2007, and yes I'm really cooking on my wood stove.

We always cook on the wood stove when the power goes out, but lately I've found myself wanting to cook our regular meals on it more and more. It's probably got a lot to do with my drive to go green in as many ways as I can.

Ignore how dirty my wood stove looks in the photos. I accidentally spilled some of the water when draining it off my macaroni, and I'll clean it up when the stove cools down!

I've always had a fascination with wood stoves, and I think it began when I was a child. My mom realized it was easier to have a pot of soup cooking on the stove while she did all that was demanded of a stay at home mom. She didn't have to stop to cook lunch or dinner. She only had to stop long enough to dish out the food and feed us.

We would play in the den where the stove was to stay warmer, so I spent more time around it everyday. I loved smelling all those wonderful food smells while we played, and when my sister got a easy bake oven I started experimenting with her little mixes. I would make up a little single serving pan of brownie mix, then I would sit it on the wood stove and watch it cook.

To this day I hate cooking unless it comes to my wood stove. I like being able to have something cooking away all day while I'm getting my housework done or fixing a customer's computer. I don't have to worry about burning the food as much because it heats a lot slower. I've finally perfected my fire building skills enough to keep my stove at the temperature I want it.

Like today I'm making my mom's "Tomato Macaroni Soup". It's one of those it's all that's left in the cabinet recipes she created years ago, and it's perfect for wood stove cooking. I've kept a fire burning at about 400-600 degrees all day, so not only am I cooking dinner, but I'm heating my home at the same time without spending a dime or using any man made power.

It really does smell wonderful right now, and it seems like even Bubba is enjoying it. I'm enjoying the fact that normally my power bills drops $40 for the month of November by using my wood stove for heat, but this year it dropped almost $60 by using it for cooking, too!

Create Your Own Posters For Free

Have you ever had an image that you wanted to turn into a poster, but you don't want to pay the expensive prices charged at most printing stores? If you've got a printer you can turn your own images into posters of any size for just the cost of the ink and paper you probably already have at home. Check out Blockposters.com to create your own posters. Upload any image you want to use, and choose how large you want it to be. I'm going to experiment by creating a poster of our bulldog, Bubba, that's 3 sheets by 3 sheets wide. If it turns out great I'll be creating a ton of other posters from our own photos that I can frame and hang wherever I want!

Job Situations

Hubby's been working construction for years, and he normally drives to North Carolina everyday because he can make almost double the salary up there than he can make in SC. We know the gas and mileage ads up, but considering it's all tax write-offs for us it hasn't been that big of a deal until now. Hubby got a job offer to run a hardwood floor install crew down here. He wouldn't be working for anyone anymore as a w-2 employee, so as a contracted employee he would have the opportunity to choose his own bids on the jobs, and he could choose to work in the prime real estate areas instead of just wherever his boss sends him. There's definitely a huge opportunity for more money, but I'm just not sure if I'm ready for hubby to be self employed. The fact that I'm already self employed would mean we're paying all of our own taxes. At least right now hubby's w-2 income cancels out a big majority of our taxes owed each year. It's definitely going to be a lot for us to think about.

Find Music Based On Your Mood

What types of music do you listen to? Does the genre choice depend on your mood? My mood always effects what type of music I want to listen to, and I found this cool site that knows that's a fact. It's called Musicovery, and the site lets you choose music based on your mood and energy level. You can choose which genres you like, and the site will automatically play a song they think fits with your mood. Don't like that song? It's OK because you've got lists of other songs circling around that one on the screen that are only a click away.

I've been listening to music on this site for a couple hours now, and I've even discovered some stuff I like that I've never heard before! The best part is it's free to listen anytime! Click on the screenshot above to get a better idea of the site.
